2020-21 campaign: Unite for Kids (amid COVID)

The theme of the 2020 and 2021 Child Abuse Prevention Month campaigns officially remained "Unite for Kids," but included a focus on "COVID-19 Parenting." We were not at liberty to hold large indoor events due to the pandemic, but even so, we took many steps to raise awareness.

  • In 2021:

    • "Pinwheels for Prevention" were planted in Guadalupe, as covered on local TV (story); in Solvang, as covered in the local newspaper (story); and in Lompoc, as covered in the local newspaper (story).

    • The Childrens Memorial Flag was raised in an outdoor ceremony to recognize children's lives lost to abuse and neglect (story and video here).

    • We participated in the fifth annual BRIDGES TO RESILIENCE 2021 conference: the biggest yet, and the first to be held as an all-virtual event! Visit https://www.bridgestoresilience.com/.

    • Social media posts reinforced the our message.

  • In 2020:

    • We promoted the Broken Places documentary on PBS (story).

    • We invited people to a virtual discussion featuring leaders in the field of trauma-informed practice including Alice Forrester, PhD from the RESILIENCE film featured in our past CAP Month events; Jim Sporleder from the PAPER TIGERS film, and James Redford, director of both films. During this time of social isolation, free virtual screenings of the films were available as well. (Story here.)

    • We shared tip sheets and social media posts on numerous topics, including Parenting in the Time of COVID-19 (see information and resources here).
